The accelerating pace of business today is creating an avalanche of information that employees need to receive, absorb, and react to. Business drivers such as ever shorter product cycles, the need to compete in new markets, the need to mobilize and train a geographically distributed workforce and collaborate across time zones, regulatory compliance, and the need to build brand and customer loyalty are intensifying the challenges around organizational communications.

Consider for a moment the sheer volume of information organizations need to impart to their employees to help them do their jobs. Executives need to communicate company strategy and successes, motivate employees, and help employees better connect their efforts to overall corporate goals. As IDC research shows, the worldwide economic crisis is prompting many organizations to increase their executive outreach these days to explain significant changes to the business or organizational structure, reassure employees during this stressful time, and focus employees on the important things they can do to help the company succeed. This is especially important as organizations are challenged to do more with less, with limited budgets and headcount.

Salespeople need current product information, price lists and marketing collateral, competitive alerts, success stories, and training to help them prospect, position, sell, and support the company's offerings. Marketing organizations need to share campaigns, product launch materials, and TV ad spots with regional marketing teams and channel participants. Human resources (HR) departments need to ensure that employees receive documents and alerts, benefits information, and compliance- mandated training.

Ensuring that all of this information is reliably communicated and that it is read, viewed, and absorbed is critical to the organization's ability to execute: It impacts risk management, employee productivity, customer retention, time to revenue for new products and services, and competitive position. And yet, effective content delivery is not a core competency in many organizations. Some still rely on email, which all too often goes unopened. Others provide access to company intranets or portals, hoping employees will self-serve. Most are unable to measure reach and viewership.
