Edge Devices - Product Reviews

VoIP, cloud technology and growing data volumes are all driving smarter, more secure edge devices

Edge devices continue to take on more network responsibility as they gain functionality and intelligence. VoIP adoption is driving edge device trends, though further uptake in that market is needed. Network monitoring edge devices can enhance VoIP quality and reliability by acting as quality of service (QoS) routers to shape traffic. Other edge devices today include routers with QoS and multi-service functions for different types of traffic. And edge devices can act as translators between different types of network protocols. Edge devices may also integrate advanced security capabilities and wireless access points and work with network access control (NAC) systems.

Edge devices can also include cell phones and wireless sensors. Moving storage to the edge has grown in popularity too as a way to reduce server overload at main data centers. For example, techniques like moving storage to the edge for video surveillance may save resources. Edge devices are also required to enable firewall and VPN capabilities, as well as support virtualization technologies around a new layer of network switches built into virtual server hypervisors. Small to midsized businesses (SMBs) still lag behind in many areas of edge device understanding and adoption.

Best-in-Class Edge Device Features:

  • Works to improve quality for VoIP systems, including scoring and directing voice traffic
  • Includes and works with security and threat protection measures
  • Offers flexibility to take on needed functionality, and integrates capabilities like wireless or advanced security features

Top Considerations before Buying Edge Device Products:

The latest edge devices are intelligent and flexible. As many infrastructure-related capabilities move to the cloud, edge devices are fighting back with features like security enforcement and better storage. Processing power of edge devices keeps increasing, and with trends like VoIP, edge devices can shine by managing traffic intelligently for increased quality and reliability. Look for new areas to include moving video storage and analytics to edge devices.

Patton Whitepaper: ATM vs. PPP - Why Frames are better than Cells at the Network Edge
Patton Electronics
There has been much excitement and talk over the years about the appropriateness of ATM for all manner of telecommunications applications. Many white papers and articles asserted that ATM was the unifying platform that would enable service providers to deliver voice, data, and video to subscribers over a consolidated link, platform, and integrated access device (IAD). Though many of the arguments ...
